Although I would love to have some hope that your prediction might not come true, these simmer down scenarios seem very unlikely to me. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if 'vaccine take' or the immunogenicity of the vaccines was generally poor, we wouldn't have seen the explosion of immune escape variants that we're seeing, because there wouldn't be enough 'immunised' people exerting suboptimal immune pressure on the virus. All the latest studies on immune escape variants I've seen also mention "reduced diversity of the neutralising antibody binding sites and increased proportions of non-neutralising antibody clones" due to "immune imprinting".

And as far as I can tell, the convergence in mutations seems to be also slowly halting in all the variants, so maybe the number of epitopes which are used in steric immune refocusing is coming to an end? Could it then finally be more advantageous for the virus to change the glycans instead of the spike? He might be missing something, although the direction is right as the XBBs show…

I really don't get it. Even if there was only a 50% chance that he's right about how this will end, shouldn't they be warning people? I think he will be proven right, sadly. What you say is very true, yet must be still hard to bear. As he quotes Norman Mailor in his book:

One argument against this however would be that Omicron appears to have been created in a lab, i.e. is (again) gain of function.
